Unit 5 of 12
Limits on collecting information
Even for a good reason, collection must be fair, reasonable and not unreasonably intrusive.
Installing a camera
When the school collects information — including by recording video — it must do so in a way that is fair, reasonable, and not unreasonably intrusive. Having a legitimate reason is not enough; the method matters too.
A boarding house manager is worried about a series of thefts from the senior residence. One concern is items going missing from the shared bathroom corridor, so they consider installing a camera. The easiest mounting point happens to point directly at the bathroom and shower entrances.
To be open about it, the manager puts up a sign explaining that a camera has been installed and why.
Has the manager met the school's privacy obligations?
Even with the sign, a boarder complains that the camera's position is an invasion of privacy.
What are reasonable responses for the manager? Select the two correct answers.
